Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School PSHE and RSE Curriculum

At Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to navigate their lives safely and successfully. We aim to foster a positive and respectful school environment where all pupils can thrive.

Curriculum Overview

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum aims to:

  • Promote Well-Being: Support pupils in developing a strong sense of self-worth and well-being, enabling them to make informed choices and build healthy relationships.

  • Equip for Life: Provide pupils with the knowledge and skills to understand and manage their emotions, relationships, and responsibilities, preparing them for the challenges of adult life.

  • Encourage Respect and Understanding: Foster respect for others and an understanding of diversity, including different relationships and family structures.

Intent

Our goals for the PSHE and RSE curriculum include:

  • Comprehensive Education: Equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and the knowledge necessary to make safe and informed decisions regarding their health and relationships.

  • Emotional Literacy: Develop pupils' emotional literacy, helping them to express their feelings and understand the feelings of others.

  • Healthy Relationships: Teach pupils about the importance of healthy relationships, consent, and respect, ensuring they understand the boundaries of appropriate behaviour.

  • Cultural Awareness: Foster an appreciation for diversity, teaching pupils to respect and celebrate differences in others.

By the end of their time at Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, pupils will possess the skills and knowledge to navigate their personal and social lives confidently and responsibly.

Implementation

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is structured around the National Curriculum and is informed by statutory guidance. Key elements include:

  • Long-Term Planning: We utilise Key Learning and Progression in Skills grids to develop comprehensive long-term planning, ensuring a coherent and progressive learning journey.

  • Unit Planning: Teachers use long-term planning to design units of work and deliver individual lessons that are engaging and relevant to pupils’ interests.

  • Interactive Learning: Employ a variety of teaching methods, including discussions, role-play, and group activities, to reinforce learning and make it enjoyable.

  • Parental Engagement: We actively involve parents in the development and review of our PSHE and RSE policy, ensuring it meets the needs of our community.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE and RSE curriculum is evident in various ways:

  • Increased Confidence: Pupils will demonstrate increased confidence in their ability to make informed decisions and manage their relationships.

  • Enhanced Understanding: Our curriculum fosters a deeper understanding of personal, social, and health issues, equipping pupils with the tools to navigate challenges.

  • Positive School Culture: By promoting respect and understanding, we create a positive school culture where all pupils feel valued and supported.

Through a variety of enriching experiences, including well-structured PSHE and RSE lessons, our pupils will be prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Teachers' planning is guided by the scheme of work developed by the PSHE Association.
