Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School Geography Curriculum

At Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will last a lifetime. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, we equip pupils with essential knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, alongside a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Curriculum Overview

Our Geography curriculum aims to:

  • Inspire Lifelong Learning: Cultivate a sense of wonder about the world, encouraging pupils to explore and appreciate the complexities of different environments and cultures.

  • Deepen Understanding: By revisiting key areas of learning regularly, pupils will remember more, know more, and understand more. This approach enhances their comprehension of the interactions between physical and human processes and the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

  • Build Confidence through Practical Experience: Provide pupils with practical experiences that foster confidence in their geographical knowledge, understanding, and skills, explaining how the Earth’s features are shaped, interconnected, and change over time.

Intent

Our goals for the Geography curriculum include:

  • Comprehensive Knowledge Development: Equip pupils with a contextual understanding of the location of significant places, both terrestrial and marine, and their defining physical and human characteristics.

  • Skill Acquisition: Develop geographical skills that enable pupils to collect, analyse, and communicate data gathered through fieldwork, enhancing their understanding of geographical processes.

  • Critical Thinking: Encourage pupils to evaluate and apply geographical information analytically, fostering a critical understanding of the world around them.

By the end of their time at Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, pupils will possess a well-rounded understanding of geography, preparing them to engage thoughtfully with the world.

Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is structured around the National Curriculum and is supported by the Royal Geographical Society. Key elements include:

  • Long-Term Planning: We utilise Subject Key Learning and Progression grids to develop comprehensive long-term planning, ensuring a coherent and progressive learning journey.

  • Unit Planning: Teachers use long-term planning to design units of work and deliver individual lessons that are engaging and relevant to pupils’ interests.

  • Fieldwork Opportunities: Pupils engage in fieldwork experiences that deepen their understanding of geographical concepts and enhance their practical skills.

Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is evident in various ways:

  • Enhanced Geographic Knowledge: Pupils will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the world’s major countries and their physical and human features.

  • Increased Engagement: Our curriculum fosters a positive attitude towards geography, encouraging pupils to appreciate the significance of their learning in real-world contexts.

  • Holistic Development: By integrating geography across the curriculum, we ensure that pupils can apply their learning in various contexts, enhancing their overall educational experience.

Through a variety of enriching experiences, including well-structured geography lessons and community engagement, our pupils will be prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
