Religious Education (RE)

Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School Religious Education Curriculum

At Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is designed to nurture pupils' understanding of Christianity and other world religions, fostering their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development in accordance with our Christian foundation.

Curriculum Overview

Our RE curriculum is rooted in the Understanding Christianity framework, which provides a comprehensive approach to teaching the Christian faith while encouraging pupils to explore other religions and worldviews. We aim to:

  • Deepen Understanding of Christianity: Equip pupils with knowledge of key Christian beliefs, practises, and narratives, allowing them to engage thoughtfully with the faith.

  • Explore Diverse Worldviews: Encourage pupils to learn about and respect other religions, fostering a spirit of tolerance and understanding within our diverse community.

  • Promote Critical Thinking: Develop pupils' ability to ask questions, reflect on their beliefs, and articulate their understanding of faith in a respectful and informed manner.

Intent

As a Church of England school, we recognise the vital role of RE in shaping our pupils' spiritual and moral development. Our goals include:

  • Inspiring Spiritual Growth: Provide opportunities for pupils to explore their own beliefs and values in the context of a Christian framework.

  • Fostering Community and Belonging: Create a welcoming environment where pupils feel valued and respected, encouraging them to engage with their faith journey and that of others.

  • Encouraging Personal Reflection: Support pupils in reflecting on their experiences and beliefs, helping them to develop a sense of identity and purpose.

By the end of their time at Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, pupils will have a well-rounded understanding of Christianity and other faiths, enabling them to engage with the world around them thoughtfully and respectfully.

Implementation

Our RE curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is structured around the Understanding Christianity framework, ensuring that pupils receive a rich and engaging education. Key elements include:

  • Interactive Learning: RE lessons are delivered through a variety of engaging methods, including discussions, storytelling, and creative activities that promote deep understanding.

  • Experiential Learning: Pupils are encouraged to participate in visits to local churches and places of worship, enhancing their understanding of religious practises and community life.

  • Reflective Practises: We incorporate opportunities for personal reflection and prayer, allowing pupils to connect with their spiritual side and express their thoughts and feelings.

  • Structured Progression: Our medium-term planning reflects a clear progression of knowledge and skills, ensuring that pupils build on their learning year after year.

Wider Curriculum Integration

Our RE curriculum is enriched through cultural activities, collective worship, and partnerships with local churches, which help to connect religious teachings with real-world applications and experiences.

Impact

By the time pupils graduate from Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, they will have acquired age-appropriate knowledge and skills in RE. They will:

  • Articulate Their Understanding: Use religious vocabulary fluently in both verbal and written forms.

  • Engage with Diverse Perspectives: Show respect and understanding towards different beliefs and practises.

  • Reflect on Personal Beliefs: Demonstrate an ability to reflect on their own beliefs and values in relation to those of others.

Through a variety of enriching experiences, including well-structured RE lessons and community engagement, our pupils will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of faith and belief in the modern world.
