Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum

At Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is designed to provide pupils with a solid foundation in Spanish, preparing them for further language study in Key Stage 3. We believe that learning a foreign language fosters curiosity, cultural awareness, and effective communication skills.

Curriculum Overview

Our MFL curriculum aims to:

  • Provide Quality Teaching: Ensure that all pupils in Key Stage 2 receive high-quality teaching of Spanish by their class teacher, enabling them to develop confidence and competence in the language.

  • Introduce Language Early: In Key Stage 1, pupils will be informally introduced to modern foreign languages through basic greetings, functional language, and nursery songs in French, laying the groundwork for future language learning.

  • Foster Curiosity and Engagement: Inspire pupils to explore the Spanish language and culture, igniting their curiosity and motivation to learn.

Intent

Our goals for the MFL curriculum include:

  • Comprehensive Language Development: Equip pupils with the skills to understand and communicate ideas, facts, and feelings in Spanish, focusing on practical communication.

  • Skill Acquisition: Develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish, allowing pupils to express themselves confidently and accurately.

  • Cultural Appreciation: Foster an appreciation for the cultures associated with the Spanish language, helping pupils understand the significance of language in a global context.

By the end of their time at Gamston St Peter's CofE Primary School, pupils will possess a well-rounded understanding of Spanish, preparing them to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

Implementation

Our MFL curriculum is structured around the National Curriculum and is supported by the Oak National Curriculum. Key elements include:

  • Long-Term Planning: We utilise Subject Key Learning and Progression in Skills grids to develop comprehensive long-term planning, ensuring a coherent and progressive learning journey.

  • Unit Planning: Teachers use long-term planning to design units of work and deliver individual lessons that are engaging and relevant to pupils’ interests.

  • Interactive Learning: Employ a variety of engaging activities, including songs, games, and conversations, to reinforce language acquisition and make learning enjoyable.

Impact

The impact of our MFL curriculum is evident in various ways:

  • Enhanced Language Proficiency: Pupils will demonstrate a growing ability to understand and communicate in Spanish, equipping them for future language studies.

  • Increased Engagement: Our curriculum fosters a positive attitude towards language learning, encouraging pupils to appreciate the significance of their learning in real-world contexts.

  • Holistic Development: By integrating MFL across the curriculum, we ensure that pupils can apply their learning in various contexts, enhancing their overall educational experience.

Through a variety of enriching experiences, including well-structured MFL lessons and cultural engagement, our pupils will be prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
