Early Years Foundation Stage

In EYFS (Nursery and Reception class) at Gamston, children develop the skills outlined within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Pupils will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development.

Pupils should mostly develop the three prime areas first.

These are:

• Communication and language
• Physical development
• Personal, social and emotional development

As our children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in four specific areas.

These are:

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design

Children in the EYFS learn by playing, exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking, which takes place both indoors and outdoors. All activities are delivered through exploration, carefully-structured play and first-hand experiences with a significant emphasis on building self-esteem
